Chester Races

Back to 'Things to see and do'

Chester Races have to be experienced, whether you’re a die-hard fan of the turf or just want an excellent day out. Chester Racecourse is unique in a couple of ways – it’s the oldest racecourse in England (there are records dating back to the sixteenth century) and it’s the only racecourse on an old Roman harbour! The site of the racecourse is known as the Roodee, meaning ‘Roods Eye’ or ‘the isle of the cross’ – before the estuary started to silt up, this was where Roman ships tied up after sailing in from the Irish Sea.

Today, the Roodee is framed by the river cliffs and the Roman city walls, making a natural amphitheatre. It’s only a short stroll from the city, so race day sees a stream of racegoers in their finery making their way to the course. Ladies Day at Chester Races is a particular favourite.

Roseville is only a short taxi ride from the Races – let us know when you book and we can arrange your taxi well in advance. We use a good reliable local firm who won’t let you down.
